The Spohr Society of the United States

The Spohr  Society of the United States  was founded in January  2008
by Prof. Susan Owen-Leinert (The University of Memphis) and Michael Leinert
(German stage director and Dramaturg, former Intendant of Staatstheater Kassel).

Our aim is to promote the music of
Louis Spohr (1784 – 1859) in the United States
and other countries, with the focus
on his mostly forgotten Lieder, oratorios and operas.

An Edition of the Spohr - Lieder,
previously believed to be lost:

WoO. 113 “Immerdar Liebe” (1845)
WoO. 120 “Wenn sich zwei Herzen finden” (1851)
WoO. 122 “Mein Verlangen” (1854), among others
is in preparation by Prof. Owen-Leinert for 2009,
on the occasion his 225th birth year and of the 150th anniversary  of his death.

Washington Irving (1783 - 1859)

The libretto to Spohr's opera DER ALCHYMIST (Kassel 1830) is based on the novel
The student of Salamanca (
in: Bracebridge Hall) by the American author Washington Irving (1783 - 1859).

Irving died in  the same year as Louis Spohr.
