The
Spohr Society of the United States
was founded in January 2008
by Prof. Susan Owen-Leinert (The University of Memphis) and Michael
Leinert
(German
stage director and Dramaturg, former Intendant of Staatstheater Kassel).
Our aim is to promote the music of
Louis Spohr (1784 – 1859) in the United States
and other countries, with
the focus
on his mostly forgotten Lieder, oratorios and operas.
An Edition of the Spohr - Lieder,
previously believed to be lost:
WoO. 113 “Immerdar Liebe” (1845)
WoO. 120 “Wenn
sich zwei Herzen finden” (1851)
WoO. 122 “Mein Verlangen” (1854), among others
is in preparation
by Prof. Owen-Leinert for 2009,
on the occasion his 225th birth year and of the 150th anniversary of his death.

The libretto to Spohr's
opera DER ALCHYMIST (Kassel 1830) is based on the novel
The student of Salamanca ( in: Bracebridge Hall) by the
American author Washington Irving (1783 - 1859).
Irving died in the same year as Louis Spohr.
